AVID

****If you were unable to attend the AVID Information Meeting on March 23rd, please follow this link for the PowerPoint slideshow presentation.

AVID is a unique program, unlike any other.  AVID is the ONLY program for students in the academic middle— not at-risk, not remedial, not GATE.  AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  It is an international program started by San Diego teacher, Mary Catherine Swanson.  AVID is a k-12th grade systematic program that prepares students to attend and graduate from a 4-year university.

The mission of the AVID program is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID targets students with academic potential, and sets them on a college preparatory path. It prepares students to succeed in the most rigorous curriculum. AVID increases student acceptance and enrollment in four-year colleges.

The AVID program teaches students specific skills that will enhance their chances of gaining entrance into a 4-year university and successfully graduating from that institution.  These skills include formed note taking, Cornell notes, time management, organization, inquiry, writing, study methods, collaboration, leadership, public speaking, and many other skills that are required in a rigorous high school curriculum (i.e. Honors and Advanced Placement) and college.

Recruitment for the AVID elective begins in February.  Students are selected for possible inclusion based on: Grade Point Average, MAPS scores, Teacher Recommendation, Special Circumstances, and many additional criteria.   AVID students must display a desire to be academically pushed to higher levels of learning.   Students are interviewed in March, and then informed of placement sometime in the late spring. The AVID Recruitment process begins with a parent/student info meeting in February.  Students will need to turn in an application, grade printout, and teacher recommendation by the posted due date. Potential candidates will be called for an interview and an on-demand written reflection.
