AVID

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. We train 80,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life. Currently, there are more than 7,000 SCHOOLS AND MORE THAN TWO MILLION STUDENTS STRONG.   AVID started at Twin Peaks Middle School back in 1996 and in 2016 we were awarded the prestigious honor of being an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction.  This is granted to only 3% of the AVID schools globally!!  As an AVID Ohana, we work diligently as a community to embed AVID strategies and methodologies into our school culture and curriculum to provide a successful and enriching experience for our Scholars.

AVID is a unique program, unlike any other. The mission of the AVID is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. AVID targets students with academic potential, and sets them on a college and career preparatory path. It prepares students to succeed in the most rigorous curriculum. AVID is a K-12th grade systematic program that prepares students to plan for beyond high school…college, trade school, military to think about their future and build skills to prepare for that future.

The AVID elective teaches students specific skills that will enhance their chances of gaining entrance into a 4-year university and successfully graduating from that institution to continue their chosen career path.  These skills include focused note taking, time management, organization, inquiry, writing, study strategies, collaboration, leadership, public speaking, and many other skills that are required in a rigorous high school curriculum (i.e. Honors and Advanced Placement)  college and beyond.

Recruitment for the AVID elective begins in the Spring!  Students are selected for possible inclusion based on: Grade Point Average, iReady & CAASPP scores, Teacher Recommendation, Special Circumstances, and many other additional criteria.   AVID students must display a desire to be academically pushed to higher levels of learning.   Students are interviewed in April and then informed of placement in the AVID Elective for the upcoming school year by June 1st. Students will complete the online application, questionnaire, and teacher recommendation by the posted due date. Potential candidates will be called for an interview and an on-demand written reflection.
